They still do this?!

The other day, just out of curiosity, I Googled which companies still test their products on animals. Yes, I do stuff like this... Anyway... I don't know why I expected the list to be short... maybe I'm naive? Maybe because it's 2012 and I thought that people have come to their senses by now? But PETA's list of Companies that do Test on Animals was long. Very long. I mean, I barely have a product in my house right now that's not on the list.

I was shocked to see most of my favorite companies on there. What the hell? Why are they still testing on animals when there are other methods for evaluating product safety? Why is this even still legal?

And what am I supposed to do now? Throw out all my current products in protest? Well, that would be the right thing to do, I guess. But you all know how expensive these types of products can be, and it has taken me years of testing different products to find my favorites and the ones that work best for me. So I really don't think that I can do that.

This has bothered me for a few days now, and I could barely go grocery shopping this past weekend. I'm stuck in a moral dilemma and I need to know what your thoughts are on this matter. Should I boycott all the companies that still test on animals? Or should I turn a blind eye and hope and pray that those companies will stop testing on animals?

Obviously, I know what the right thing to do is, but I guess I'm just hoping for an alternative. I would love to hear your opinions on this.

  1. Garbage! I'm disappointed. There are a few companies there that I really like and have multiple products from; and I was planning on buying from in the near future, but now I'm not so sure. Then again I am in the midst of trying to go organic and more natural, so I guess knowing this helps and encourages me to switch over.

    1. I'm so disappointed, too! I guess it's not impossible to boycott these products, there are some great companies out there that don't test on animals. But still, it will be really hard to give up on some of my favorite products :-(

  2. OMG I didn't know L'occitane does that too... Their products are expensive and very good and I like them, but this really dissapointed me.

Othewise most of the products I use are those with Vegan sign. Like Lavera and Alverde.

Lots of those products can be bought in DM stores. We have a lot of those stores all over Slovenija.

    1. I know, I'm so surprised by some of these companies, it's very disappointing. I'll have to start doing my research more before going shopping for cosmetics and household cleaning products. What a bummer, right.

  3. First of all you may want to check other sites than PETA's. They have a political agenda you so you get a serious slant on the story. I'm not saying they're lying but no matter how noble they make it sound, they are in business to make money as well as promote their message.

You really need to know what kind of testing is involved. Do they shave a rat with a razor to see if it slows down the hair growth or do they inject them with poison to see if their deaths are painful? The type of test makes a difference.

If you do start boycotting every company that runs tests on animals then I suggest you never get sick. It's a sad truth that all medicines are tested on animals. I know there is a difference between testing to save lives and testing to make money but I'm willing to bet that the animals don't see the difference.

Before you get angry, understand that I'm not for animal testing. I just understand that it's an ugly part of this world.

    1. Thanks for your comment. I would never get angry with someone for expressing their personal opinion, in fact, I enjoy hearing about people's different points of view.

I did check other sites as well, but decided to link to PETA's site, as they tend to keep it up to date, and according to other sites I visited, the PETA list is pretty accurate.

I personally don't think that any cosmetic or household product should be tested on an animal, no matter if it hurts them or not. Then again, I'm not a vegetarian and eat meat, and I'm fully aware of how those animals are treated prior to becoming a steak or a schnitzel.

So where should we draw the line? This is what's bothering me a lot.

    2. I agree with you, Liesl. PETA demands people to stop drinking milk, boycott dairy products just because, when the cows get old & aren't capable anymore, they slaughter them, which is in fact a very cruel thing to do but then again, where should we draw the line is the biggest question in my mind too :)

  4. The sad fact is that even if you boycott, plenty of other people still won't. I'm not saying that you shouldn't make the choice to do it. I would definitely respect you for it. But a lot of these companies have so many customers already that they would have to lose millions before they start caring.

  5. Yes, but why don't you start wih yourself, stop buying cosmetics and tell a friend of two that you are using other great cosmetics - that will make a diffence.
i use: Dr Nona, Bodyshop, Dr Organic and Lush - i had my skin tested under ultraviolet light to check how they moisturize my skin - and Lush was the best. Put the list of companies that still test on animals on yor Fb or something else, i bet some people will change their mind. I myself became vegetaian, cause how they treat animals, truth is that: just because you wanna for twenty minutes have something tasty in you mouth some animal has to live and die just for it. Would you do it to your dog, cat? Just because people refuse to admit it animals are still dying.
